True Portfolio Diversification
Historically, our performance often has been favorable when dislocations,
whether of a political or economic origin, have occurred in worldwide financial
markets. During the 1987 U.S. stock market crash, for example, our investors
benefited significantly from their investment in our programs. Ten years
later, amid a rapidly weakening Japanese economy, which saw Japan's equity
investments decline, our clients profited from programs that traded short
positions in the Japanese yen. In the summer of 1998, as global equity markets
and some of the largest hedge funds declined, we continued to add value.
Today, many investors have reevaluated the idea of participating in overseas
markets, and for some, even the U.S. markets. We believe the risk lies not
in global participation per se, but in the long-only investment strategies
often employed by managers of equity and fixed income portfolios. In today's
global economy, the performance of stocks and bonds in one country is often
highly correlated to the performance of stocks and bonds in another country.
If all of one's investments are dependent on rising equity and fixed income
markets for success, adding another investment dependent on the same factors
may not decrease portfolio risk. In this sense, the issue of portfolio diversification
is misunderstood. The only thing that rises in troubled times is the correlation
among financial assets.
Dynamic Investment Strategies
The ability to take long or short positions in futures and forwards creates the potential to profit whether markets are rising or falling. Depending on the programs selected, investors can participate in over 80 markets, encompassing global interest rates, currencies, stock indices, energy, precious and base metals, grains and other agricultural commodities, emerging markets as well as those of the major industrialized regions. Unlike stocks - which in a general bear market tend to fall as a group - there is little historical correlation among this range of markets. At any given time there can be a bull market in one area and a bear market in another; for example, U.S. soybean prices can be rising while the Swiss franc is falling, with both markets offering opportunities for gain.

Infrastructure
Using proprietary systems, JWH filters vast amounts of global market data to identify price trends, achieve results and calculate performance. The firm's Information Technology professionals develop and enhance JWH's trading and administrative programs. Among their accomplishments in recent years have been the creation of the Electronic Trading System - a paperless trading system - and the implementation of a performance reconciliation and reporting program called STARS. Information Technology is also charged with the development of software solutions for JWH's systems where none are commercially available, and the monitoring of the firm's complex communications. Hardware and software are regularly upgraded to maintain compatibility with changing technologies.
Regulatory Oversight
We operate in a highly regulated industry, subject to the regulations of both the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), an agency of the U.S. federal government, and the National Futures Association (NFA), a self-regulatory organization that operates under CFTC oversight, and to which participants in the industry must belong. All of the U.S. exchanges on which we trade are under CFTC supervision. The non-U.S. exchanges on which we may trade are also subject to government supervision (although under regulatory standards different from those in the U.S.). In addition, a large proportion of our Assets Under Management is in U.S. public funds, which are under the jurisdiction of the Securities and Exchange Commission as well as the CFTC.
